{"id":12102,"date":"2023-07-14T07:30:00","date_gmt":"2023-07-14T11:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pditechnologies.com\/?p=12102"},"modified":"2023-11-17T08:29:37","modified_gmt":"2023-11-17T13:29:37","slug":"learning-about-your-new-ev-while-trying-not-to-feel-stupid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pditechnologies.com\/blog\/learning-about-your-new-ev-while-trying-not-to-feel-stupid\/","title":{"rendered":"Learning about Your New EV While Trying Not to Feel Stupid"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>My first thought when they popped the hood and I looked down was, \u201cHey, I don\u2019t have an engine!\u201d That was how I discovered my car\u2019s charging cables are stored in an area that resembles a mini trunk in the front of my vehicle&#8230;and there is, indeed, no engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/pditechnologies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/learn-about-ev-hood-open.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12095\" style=\"width:600px;height:800px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pditechnologies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/learn-about-ev-hood-open.jpg 600w, https:\/\/pditechnologies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/learn-about-ev-hood-open-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"mbm-spacer mbm-spacer__16 mbm-spacer__sm-16 mbm-spacer__md-32 mbm-spacer__lg-48 wp-block-mbm-responsive-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, I was such an EV rookie that I didn\u2019t even realize EVs don\u2019t have engines. This led me to wonder, \u201cIf there\u2019s no engine, what are the unique parts in an EV?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the third blog post in this EV series, I\u2019ll try to save you the embarrassment of asking what might be construed as \u201cuninformed\u201d questions. It all starts with what parts are unique to EVs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-key-components-of-an-electric-vehicle\">Key components of an electric vehicle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In doing my research to write this, I noticed that most lists of EV components appeared in alphabetical order. I reordered them to help me understand how they work together to make the vehicle operate. If you want the alphabetical list, there\u2019s a link at the end of this section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, guess what&#8230;there are actually TWO batteries in my EV! Yes, my mind was blown, too. Here\u2019s what they are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Traction battery pack:<\/strong> This is the star of the show. This battery stores electricity for use by the electric traction motor, so it\u2019s what really makes the vehicle go. When you plug in your EV to charge, this is the battery that\u2019s being charged.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Auxiliary battery:<\/strong> This battery powers the vehicle\u2019s accessories, such as electric seats and mirrors, audio devices, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"mbm-spacer mbm-spacer__16 wp-block-mbm-responsive-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>But there\u2019s a lot more than just batteries. Battery-adjacent components include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Charge port:<\/strong> This allows the vehicle to connect to an external power supply in order to charge the traction battery pack. It\u2019s how you \u201cplug in\u201d your vehicle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Onboard charger:<\/strong> This brings the power into the system. It takes incoming AC electricity supplied via the charge port and converts it to DC power for charging the traction battery. It also communicates with the charging equipment and monitors battery characteristics such as voltage, current, temperature, and state of charge.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>DC\/DC converter:<\/strong> This device converts higher-voltage DC power from the traction battery pack to the lower-voltage DC power needed to run vehicle accessories and recharge the auxiliary battery. I really should have paid more attention when we learned about electricity in school. I do, however, pay attention to movies that star David Bowie. Thus, I saw \u201cThe Prestige\u201d (2006) and learned that Bowie\u2019s character, Nikola Tesla, was the inventor of AC power, and Thomas Edison was the inventor of DC power (and seemed like a kind of questionable dude).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"mbm-spacer mbm-spacer__16 wp-block-mbm-responsive-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>But what exactly makes the car go?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Electric traction motor:<\/strong> Using power from the traction battery pack, this motor drives the vehicle\u2019s wheels. Some EVs use motor generators that perform both the drive and regeneration functions. An example of a regeneration function is when you hit the brakes and capture energy back into the vehicle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Power electronics controller:<\/strong> This unit manages the flow of electrical energy delivered by the traction battery, controlling the speed of the electric traction motor and the torque it produces. This is also the bad boy that consumes multiple miles of charge when you put the pedal to the metal on the freeway.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Thermal system (cooling):<\/strong> This system maintains a proper operating temperature range of the electric motor, power electronics, and other components.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Transmission (electric):<\/strong> The transmission transfers mechanical power from the electric traction motor to drive the wheels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"mbm-spacer mbm-spacer__16 wp-block-mbm-responsive-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a diagram of how this all comes together:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"mbm-spacer mbm-spacer__16 wp-block-mbm-responsive-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/pditechnologies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/learn-about-ev-car-diagram.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12093\" style=\"width:600px;height:375px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pditechnologies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/learn-about-ev-car-diagram.jpg 600w, https:\/\/pditechnologies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/learn-about-ev-car-diagram-300x188.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Source: US Department of Energy<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"mbm-spacer mbm-spacer__16 mbm-spacer__sm-16 mbm-spacer__md-32 mbm-spacer__lg-48 wp-block-mbm-responsive-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to learn more, here\u2019s some helpful information from the <a href=\"https:\/\/afdc.energy.gov\/vehicles\/how-do-all-electric-cars-work\">US Department of Energy<\/a>, including an overview of how EVs, hybrids, hydrogen vehicles, and Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Maintenance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Two days after my EV purchase, I sent this text to the guy who sold me the car: \u201cWhat\u2019s the deal with oil changes? I don\u2019t need them, right? What does maintenance look like?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, I probably should have asked that question prior to buying (hence the title of this blog). The answer is my EV needs maintenance every 10,000 miles and here\u2019s the type of work it will need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"735\" src=\"https:\/\/pditechnologies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/learn-about-ev-maintenance-list.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12096\" style=\"width:600px;height:735px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pditechnologies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/learn-about-ev-maintenance-list.jpg 600w, https:\/\/pditechnologies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/learn-about-ev-maintenance-list-245x300.jpg 245w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"mbm-spacer mbm-spacer__16 mbm-spacer__sm-16 mbm-spacer__md-32 mbm-spacer__lg-48 wp-block-mbm-responsive-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Wait&#8230;did you read that list? My car has a first aid kit? That\u2019s a thoughtful inclusion. (Then I went back and asked the sales rep and it turns out my vehicle does not actually have a first aid kit\u2014but I bought one anyway, because it seems like every vehicle should have one.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hopefully, I\u2019ve at least saved you from asking a couple rookie questions when you start looking at EVs.
